Electrician trade under Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS) is one of the most popular courses delivered nationwide through a network of ITIs. The course is of two years duration. It mainly consists of Domain area and Core area. The Domain area (Trade Theory & Practical) impart professional skills and knowledge, while Core area(Workshop Calculation and science, Engineering Drawing and Employability Skills) impart requisite core skill, knowledge and life skills. After passing out of the training program, the trainee is awarded National Trade Certificate (NTC) by DGT which is recognized worldwide.

In the first year the trainee learns about safety and environment, use of fire extinguishers, artificial respiratory resuscitation to begin with. He gets the idea of trade tools & its standardization, identifies different types of conductors, cables & their skinning & joint making. In second year the trainee will study the details of electrical rotating machines viz. DC machines, induction motors, alternators & MG sets and practice on them. The trainee will practice on determining characteristics, their performance analysis, starting, speed control and reversing direction of rotation of machines. He will practice on parallel operation & synchronization of alternators, winding practice and overhauling will be practiced for DC machine and induction motors.

Indigenous industries are being incubated in India under ‘Make in India’ initiative. Tremendous amount of Electrician ITI trainees will be required to work in these companies and industries. There are many options for making a career in government organizations like Railways, Indian Army, ISRO/DRDO, NTPC, BHEL, ONGC, electricity departments, thermal power plants, nuclear power plants, hydro power plants etc. After completion of this course, you can work as a wireman, electrician, electrical supervisor, lineman, electrical maintainer, lab technician, service technician, foreman, electrical contractor, expert re-winder, technical helper, power electrician etc.
